Watching the birds go by…

I am not a bird watcher…. At least I didn’t think so until I saw a glorious Macaw parrot up close.

A Macaw is a large parrot with a very long tail. The bird can measure 40 inches with amazingly brightly colored feathers and a fun personality to match. While they are not a native here in Oregon, there are plenty of other birds in our neighborhoods that are also glorious to watch.

You can see the white egrets in many coastal inlets this time of year. They gracefully search for fish, frogs, and bugs and nest in trees or large shrubs. They have fairly long legs and a pointy yellow beak, and are significantly larger than a seagull.

There are plenty of nearby places to birdwatch locally including parks, beaches, trails, natural areas, rest stops, trails, and scenic pullovers. There are also trails and guided birdwatching walks. There are many local haunts to visit (at little or no cost!) that could include the Millicoma Marsh, Bandon Marsh, and the John Topits Park (with three Empire lakes). Even the Bandon dock sports a lot of large, migrating brown pelicans in the fall.

The more you look the more you see! And the nice thing? They feed themselves.
