February is Black History Month
Proclamation Heading
At this week’s Council meeting, the City Council unanimously approved a proclamation designating February as Black History Month in Coos Bay. Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans, remembering the sacrifices of so many at the hands of others, and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jamar Ruff and Shirley Reynolds who came to this week’s City Council meeting and read the above proclamation.

-Joe Benetti, Mayor of Coos Bay
